Rick Smead makes a late pass to win Daytona Trucks. Rob Partridge claims the championship. Rick Smead won at Daytona on Sunday 05/18 in the NSR Nortex Early Bird at GTRL Summer Series. The new season opened with a bang at Daytona. Rob Partridge took the pole. The race started with 15 trucks bunched up in a Hornet's nest and no caution. All seemed to be calm so far. When the mid-race competition was called everybody was ready for part 2. No quarters until the end. 2 wides, 3 wides we even saw a 4 wide but sooner or later somebody would have to pay for the temerity of others. Caution flew and we all got fresh tires and fuel. A couple stayed out and eventually ran out of fuel when the race had to finish under a GWC. The last few laps were just totally insane and on the last lap on the back stretch, the big one finally happened taking out anybody passed 2nd position. Some lucky ones in the back were able to navigate through the flying trucks and parts and ended up with super good finishes. At the end of the day, Rick Smead took his first win ever. Congrats. Rumor has it that after the race, he got arrested for indecent exposure for running around his house in his birthday suit screaming: "I Won, I Won, I Won" Really Rick, we just asked you to do it as a joke, not literally! Anyway, it was a fun and exciting race. Good job by all, and see you all next Sunday at Iowa. | |
